Each civilization in the game has one Clipper class hull, Ocean, is Mankind’s. Clipper class hulls are neither suited for battle nor transportation, but they can do what no other class of hull can…
Strengths and weaknesses
The Ocean is a small, lightweight hull, but it is a must-have ship for anyone playing as Mankind (likewise for each civilization and its own Clipper class: Poisk for People’s Realm, T12 for Syntis and Hunter for Ripchee)!
What makes Clipper hulls vital are their unique special slots, which make them the only hull class in the game compatible with cloaking and mine detecting/sweeping technologies.
A cloaking module enables a ship to hide itself from scanners, rendering it invisible, while a cloak detector enables a ship to detect cloaked ships. Cloaked ships are perfect for launching an ambush or stealthily gathering intel on an enemy.
The below image shows a cloaked fleet moving through a star system (the yellow ETA shows how long the ship can remain cloaked for based on available fuel – which is required for cloaking. The green icon indicates that the cloak is engaged, as does the white Moving and cloaked label above the fleet name.
The Ocean has two of these special slots, meaning it could be equipped with both a cloaking module and cloak detector, but this would leave no space for a mine detector or sweeper.
Mine detecting and sweeping
Minelaying can only be performed by Frigate class hulls equipped with a minelayer part. However, mine detector and minesweeper parts are only compatible with Clipper class hulls (like the Ocean).
While a mine detector part can only detect the existence of a minefield, a minesweeper can both detect and neutralize minefields. Minesweeping happens automatically while a minesweeper is within a minefield. Gradually, the minefield density decreases until the minefield is completely destroyed.
In the image below, the faint red ring around the star system represents a minefield, while the blue circle around the ship indicates that the ship has a minesweeper attached which is working on clearing the minefield.
Research & technology
Before gaining access to Ocean hulls and the ability to design ships using it, the technology Clipper class hulls must first be researched. As it’s a tech-level two hull, only shipyards that have also been upgraded to tech-level two or above are able to construct Ocean ship designs (to be able to upgrade a shipyard, Macro engineering technology first has to be researched).
