In Beyond Dark, there will be 12 different civilizations from which you can choose to play. The civilizations are highly distinctive from each other, with their individual characteristics resulting in both strengths and weaknesses relative to the other civilizations.
Both the appearance and specification of your empire’s ships, technology, buildings, etc. will all be determined by your choice of civilization. But through either trade or treachery, you will also be able to add native technology from another civilization to your own empire!
In this post, we’re going to introduce you to the Syntis, a highly advanced, non-organic species of autonomous robots.
Origins of the Syntis
Before colonizing a planet, advanced spacefaring civilizations would first send their automatons to prepare and adapt the planet. These automatons had the capability to utilize the advanced technologies of their creators, and were able to complete the full cycle of required planetary development.
As each stage of planetary development was completed, each generation would reengineer itself into the necessary state required to perform the next stage. A sophisticated level of artificial intelligence ensured maximum efficiency of performance, materials and specific planetary conditions.
By the time these autonomous robots are finished, the planet is equipped with cities, factories, and a self-sustaining ecosystem; everything the incoming colonists could need to thrive.
But what do the automatons do if those colonists never arrive?
Emergence of the Syntis
The Syntis are the necroevoled, conscious descendants of the automatons. The result of generations of self-optimization, learning and development, that went unchecked by the original creators.
Due to the absence of primitive, ancestral emotions found in many advanced biological species, the Syntis are neither naturally aggressive nor passive: they are simply concerned with the preservation and advancement of their kind.
Their strongest trait is the computational power of their mind, which gives them the inherent ability to organize a superior level of production, and build ships of enviable performance.
With the right resources and access to energy, the Syntis are capable of immortality. But this reliance and high consumption of energy, makes replicating additional Syntis units, and construction, extremely energy expensive.
Nobody knows their true origins, nor what became of their creators. But the secrets are waiting to be revealed somewhere, deep in the Beyond Dark universe.
