Beyond Dark’s online universe is the largest ever created for a strategy game. Home to millions of planets and hosting thousands of players, it is full of surprises waiting to be discovered. So how will you and other players begin to explore this massive, persistent online universe?
Fog of War
Whilst planets provide the base of resources required to build structures and ships, they can also deliver strong defensive capabilities and project great power whilst you explore the universe with your colony ships and battle fleets.
Just like real life exploration our game plays in a fog-of-war, meaning star systems must be discovered and enemy ships are not visible unless you are actively scanning that area of space.
Each ship is equipped with sensors which can uncover the presence of new star systems as well as enemy ships and planets. It is important to place your fleets on carefully planned patrols to ensure adequate sensor coverage of your outer-territory. Your sensor coverage is clearly visible to you at all times.
Sneak attacks are still possible through a variety of means, such as through the use of stealth ships. To counter these, players usually also cover critical parts of their space with minefields. Once a stealth ship is damaged, it will be forced to decloak.
At 100 LY (light years), sensors can uncover basic information, such as the presence of an enemy fleet along with it’s speed and direction. Once within a 25 LY of your ship it is possible to see the class of the enemy ship, along with civilization and owning player. At 5 LY sensors will reveal the specific technology and cargo on the ship.
Sensor Array Structures
You can also build sensor array structures on your planets to give the area around your planet permanent coverage of nearby space, allowing you to monitor and respond to all friendly and enemy activity.
Testing the Sensor System
Our developers use a special grid-like test universe for testing sensor coverage. Stars should be correctly revealed as the ship moves. To do this we have created some special galaxies with tightly packed stars in a grid (the grid shape is just for testing). We then fly ships to various destinations at different speeds and check the correct stars become visible to the player.
