Hello everyone and welcome to the first installment in our new Developer Diary series (better late than never?).
These posts will be a bit of a mixed bag, maybe preview a new feature, go over something going on behind the scenes, let you know if any of our devs have thrown a laptop out the window in frustration, that sort of thing – something to keep you guys in the loop a bit more between patches.
Now let’s get down to business…
The response we’ve had from players has been mostly positive, with some understandable disappointment regarding features that are still on ice. We’re very grateful for all your responses, thoughts and ideas – so let us know on the forum if there’s anything you want to share.
The first feature that hopefully you’ll be able to see soon enough is a new version of the fleet management screen.
Almost the whole interface was changed to be more user friendly. New functionality has been added, and what was there previously has been improved (more options and info shown). Other changes coming to fleet management involve being able to form/separate fleets using context menus alone.
Another task well underway is the implementation of wreckages. Wreckages will appear after every battle and contain different loot for salvaging. You will be able to collect this loot with any nearby fleet (even a player not involved in the original battle if they can get there first). But wreckages will stay in space only for a limited time (maybe a couple of days) before disappearing.
Yes, you read that right. No, this wasn’t on our roadmap. But…
Asteroid fields – and being able to mine them – was something we looked at not that long ago but decided to put to one side.
However, while working on wreckages, one of the devs felt like mineable asteroid fields could be copy and pasted (slight exaggeration) into existence using wreckages and some other code/designs we already had lying around.
Wreckages will be introduced to the current Alpha galaxy when they are ready, but asteroid fields will only be included in future galaxies (as they are spawned at random during galaxy generation). Each field will contain only one type of resource, but it will be enough to provide a decent supply for a small colony. You’ll have to mine it though, which will require a new Mining module for ships that will be added to the game at the same time.
More details about wreckages and asteroid fields will be revealed later.
That’s all for today! Thank you all and see you soon 🙂
