When Beta launches, you’ll be able to choose from four civilizations to play (eventually twelve). In development, we’ve already been working on two of these: Mankind and the Syntis, so they will be ready for Beta. We recently put up a post here on the Syntis and will do the same for Mankind soon.
But we need to decide the other two civilizations to have ready for Beta – which we thought we’d leave up to you guys!

Our developers have been working on the core battle engine, shields, lasers, and some pretty awesome rocket launchers! We’re very excited with the progress so far, and are looking forward to getting some videos out to you soon.
In this scenario a battle has broken out between a frigate and a fleet of four smaller ships. The combatants exchange laser and rocket fire, before the action eventually comes to an explosive conclusion!

[Read more…]In Beyond Dark, there will be 12 different civilizations from which you can choose to play. The civilizations are highly distinctive from each other, with their individual characteristics resulting in both strengths and weaknesses relative to the other civilizations.
Both the appearance and specification of your empire’s ships, technology, buildings, etc. will all be determined by your choice of civilization. But through either trade or treachery, you will also be able to add native technology from another civilization to your own empire!
In this post, we’re going to introduce you to the Syntis, a highly advanced, non-organic species of autonomous robots.
Hey everyone, you may have already seen, but we have recently launched our campaign to get pre-approved on Steam via their Greenlight process! If you haven’t yet seen our page, be sure to do so to check out our new preview trailer.
For anyone that doesn’t know, Greenlight is Valve’s way of determining which games should be accepted for release on the Steam store. Once Greenlit, developers are free to release their game on Steam as soon as they are ready.
We stated a while ago Beyond Dark would be available on Steam, and so wanted to get it pre-approved on there, to avoid any possible delays when the time for release comes. Some games never get Greenlit, while for others it can take a number of months, so fingers crossed it doesn’t take too long!
Please note that we do plan to make the full release of Beyond Dark available outside of Steam – including directly from us. The Beta software though, when released, will be available exclusively from us (we’ll let everyone know when this will be when we can).
[Read more…]Hi everyone, in this week’s post we thought we’d give an overview of the current fleet management implementation. It’s still very much a work in progress but a lot of the basics are there.
We’ve had a dedicated card on fleet positioning on our feature board for a few months and will continue to use feedback from there, so if you have any thoughts, please share them in the comments there or on this post below.
In our previous blog post we introduced the ship designer. Since then, we’ve made some improvements and additions.
Highly customizable ships were a frequent request, so we’re very pleased to be able to deliver them! You can change everything: engines, weapon types/capacity, radar, hull, cargo/fuel slots, shields etc.

[Read more…]Welcome back, this is part 2 of a series of video updates that serve as a quick introduction to Beyond Dark. The galaxy is very small and the game/player has just started. If you haven’t already done so, you can find the 1st part of this video update here.
The videos on this page introduce additional environmental effects and viewpoints while covering most of the same screens as the first videos. We will go in to more depth with these screens and cover additional gameplay in future videos.

Some of you may have already stumbled upon the Leaderboard recently added to Call to Arms. If not, you can access it by clicking here.
You’ll need to be logged in to Call to Arms, and before viewing the Leaderboard and related prizes for the first time, you’ll also need to choose your own Leaderboard display name.
Thanks to everyone participating in Call to Arms. Your help in getting more people to sign up for Beyond Dark enables us to invest more, which in turn enables us to develop more community suggested features from the roadmap!
We added the Leaderboard to Call to Arms as an opportunity to give out more rewards to players that had gone beyond the initial Grand Admiral tier of 50 points.
The Leaderboard is an extension to Call to Arms and will finish when Call to Arms finishes. From that point we will begin to get the rewards out to the people who have finished in the Top 10 positions.
