Hey everyone, following on from our recent battles screenshots post we had a lot of requests for some video which we’re pleased to have here for you finally!
The previous battles post explained how battles will work, so if you haven’t a chance yet to read that post you can find it here.
In the following videos you’ll see lasers, rockets, beam weapons, and even a swarm of fighters at work! If you’re short on time, make sure you at least watch the last video at the bottom of this article!
If you like what you see please let us know in the comments below. There are also a few battle/weapons related Trello cards on our feature board where you can join in the discussion and help shape the development of Beyond Dark.
Two small fleets – all out attack
Battles happen in 3D and can be viewed from multiple camera perspectives and zoom ranges (all player controlled). In this clip, a fierce battle has just started and both fleets are throwing everything they have at each other: beams, lasers and rockets.
The two fleets are similarly matched, except the fleet nearest to the camera has an additional two small ships supporting with their additional firepower. Maybe this was the deciding factor on the final outcome?
Carrier vs Destroyer – both perspectives
The action begins close to the large carrier ship. It’s armed with two rocket launchers which are focussing fire on the lone ship in the distance.
The other fleet consists of just a single destroyer this time, which is reciprocating fire with its own barrage of rockets and beam fire.
The destroyer has intercepted the carrier from behind, but because the carrier is fitted with rocket launchers it has a 360-degree strike range and can defend itself. This example illustrates the importance of sensible fleet management. Large ships with slow turning circles need the ability to strike behind, or accompanying support ships to prevent an aggressor’s attack going unchallenged.
At 35 seconds in to the video we start from the beginning of the battle again but from the opposite perspective (behind the destroyer). Players will have the ability to replay battles, which will enable analysis and performance evaluation for future tactical decision making..
Fighters launch, attack, return to launch bay
If you’ve been following along on our feature board, seeing a fully working implementation of fighters might come as a nice surprise!
It was a card that saw a lot of activity and we’re very pleased to have been able to squeeze it in before Beta. With this working version in place, there is a lot of scope for future expansion visually, and in terms of gameplay.
In this video, the carrier ship in the distance is equipped with two fighter bays and fighter units. These are launched 8 seconds in to the video and begin to buzz around the ship in the foreground while firing their beam weapons.
The destroyer being attacked has no turrets or weaponry capable of picking off the fighters (coming soon), but it continues to fire beams and lasers at the carrier.
Once the fighters have finished their attack run they can be seen returning to the carrier and entering the fighter bays for landing.
Strong carrier fleet obliterates enemy
With this video we think we’ve saved the best til last! The previous videos were mostly static, while here we have two entire fleets in motion.
The action is intense and doesn’t last long, the large carrier fleet nonchalantly blasts the approaching fleet out of existence.
Movement of fleets and angle of attack when a battle begins can be big deciding factors in the outcome. Poor fleet strategy could leave your fleet vulnerable to certain attacks and prove very costly!
Beyond Dark: grand strategy, stunning detail
Beyond Dark is first and foremost a grand strategy game, so we’re immensely pleased to have been able to go the extra mile and build in the level of detail that can be seen in the above combat videos – especially at this early stage.
There’s still a lot to be done and plenty of room for improvement, but we hope that everyone is excited as we are about what’s to come!
Have you voted for the civilization you would most like to see in Beta yet? If not, there is still time to do so, but we will be closing the vote very soon! You can find out more at the following link:
