We’re thinking of launching a second galaxy but first want to make sure that it’s something players want?
We believe it’s possible to launch a second galaxy that would be fun, a different experience to the current galaxy, AND would only briefly distract the devs from their current roadmap tasks.
The other galaxy would carry on as normal – both galaxies running at the same time – and players wouldn’t have to join the second galaxy if they didn’t want to.
Why launch a second galaxy?
It’s something that players ask us from time to time:
- To play as another civ without disrupting their existing game
- To be able to video and share their gameplay without giving away intel on themselves (we plan to provide map filters in the future that will enable a player to turn off/obfuscate elements in the UI to be able to stream their gameplay without putting a target on their back)
- To test out an alternative game configuration
- Just for fun
From our perspective, we’d be interested in launching a second galaxy to see if players change how they play under different conditions e.g. would players challenge each other more if resources were less abundant?
What could we do differently from the current galaxy?
To launch a second galaxy different to the current one, but without taking up too much of the dev’s time, doesn’t leave many options:
Could we speed up the game clock?
When the topic of a second galaxy has come up in the past, players have asked if we could speed up the game clock (the faster pace would enable them to play more frequently, in longer playing sessions, and subsequently provide us with more feedback).
But due to the technical complexities involved (the game is spread across multiple services where timing is critical) the time investment required from the devs would be more than we could spare right now. Also, speeding up the game clock would put players that couldn’t get online frequently at a disadvantage and unable to participate to a meaningful degree.
A smaller galaxy
We believe the most feasible option is to reduce the galaxy’s size to a few thousand star systems. This change would be sufficient to alter the feel of the game in an interesting way, without slowing down development.
The current galaxy is so large that players can – and usually do – continue their expansion without ever locking horns with other players. Preferring to travel further to planets that are of less value than to challenge another player for a more advantageous planet closer to home.
A smaller galaxy with less resources would mean players having to go up against each other if they want to expand their empire beyond a couple of planets. We’d love to see this as players battling each other would help us test for bugs. And we’d find out from players if having to compete more with other players pushes the needle towards a more enjoyable game?
If you’d like us to launch this smaller second galaxy, let us know on the forum! We’ll make a final decision based on the responses. If it’s something that players want, we’ll post a followup with a launch schedule a few days later. And if there isn’t any interest in it, we’ll shelve the idea for now. So be sure to post and let us know!
